What You Ought to Know About Breast Implant History

Breast implantsBreast enlargement has a history that goes back over 119 years. During the first 65 years or so the enlargement was done primarily by directly injecting substances like paraffin, fat or silicon into the breasts. This method proved to be rather dangerous and led to many ill effects. Before the year 1962 plastic foam materials were used, however these too did not have much success. In 1963 two scientists namely Thomas Cronin and Frank Gerow did a research on breast implants and came up with the idea of implanting silicon bags directly into the breasts of women for breast enlargement. By the year 1972 a lot of women turned to these breast implants but also complained of many problems like leakage and ruptures. The silicon was then replaced with saline bags containing a saline (salt) solution. Even if these bags leaked there was no harm caused to the body as the water was absorbed up by the body.

The silicon breast implants used in present times for breast enlargement have gone over a number of changes from generation to generation. If we look at the history of breast implants, after 1963 there were three major generations of [...]

Saline and Silicon Breast Implants

Breast implantsBreast implants are used to facilitate women to achieving their desired breast size and shape. Many women around the world are dissatisfied with their breast sizes. They often search a way out to fulfill their aspirations. There are number of ways one can go for a breast implant.

These implants are of ‘saline-filled’, ‘silicone gel-filled’, ‘silicone-saline’ combination, ‘PVP-Hydrogel’ and ‘plant oil filled’ procedures. Sometimes you can go for rounded breast implant or anatomic breast implant. While the rounded implant gives a fuller upper chest and cleavage, the anatomic (often called teardrop) implants give your upper chest a more natural looking. [...]

The Amazing History of Breast Implants

The Amazing History of Breast ImplantsThe first documented attempt to augment (enlarge) the breast happened 119 years ago. For the first 68 years, breast augmentation was attempted by direct injection with materials, including paraffin, fat, and free silicone. These attempts led to disastrous consequences including infection, hard breast lumps, deformity, fat absorption, fat necrosis, and chronic inflammatory reactions. Removal was difficult, sometimes leading to measures as drastic as mastectomy. After the invention of the mammogram, these injections were found to create artifacts that made cancer screening more difficult. For these reasons, direct injections of the breast were abandoned by most plastic surgeons in the US. Free silicone injections into the breast for augmentation still continued in many other countries into the latter part of the 20th century, however.

Commercially-made breast implants were first available in the US in 1958, and over 200 different implant types and designs have been made since then. Experts estimate that 60% of these were silicone gel filled implants with the exception of 1992-2006, when the FDA moratorium was in place. During this time, saline-filled implants dominated the market. Dow Corning dominated the implant market for the first 30 years, but over 15 other companies made breast implants during the 1980s.

Although Congress gave the FDA authority to regulate medical devices in 1976, breast implants had been “grandfathered in,” and few of the products underwent rigorous testing in clinical trials prior to sale on the open market. Regulation of breast implants did not occur until 1991, when the FDA asked companies to submit premarket approval applications. As a result, the implant industry was caught blind sided when the FDA demanded comprehensive data with a 90-day deadline for completion of all safety studies. [...]

Breast Implant Warning!

breast implantIf you’re considering breast augmentation that’s great, but let me take the time to ask that you take the time to do your homework and find out all you can about the procedure first. Even more important is that you research the cosmetic surgeons you’re considering and find out everything you can about them too. Breast implants can be a great improvement, but it’s up to you to get all the information about possible complications and side effects before undergoing the surgery.

There are two types of breast implants used; those made with silicone and those made from saline. They both have an outer shell of silicone, the difference is in the filling. Saline implants are filled with salt water and silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. Both can be used effectively for breast augmentation and each has it’s pros and cons. Currently there are only a few companies that are authorized by the FDA to make breast implants.

You might be surprised to learn that breast implants have been around for over 40 years. Silicone was the first material used for breast implants, however since the use of saline breast augmentation procedures have really gained in popularity, with over 300,000 breast enhancement surgeries done last year in the U.S. alone. Silicone implants were viewed very skeptically initially because of problems associated with the breast implants rupturing. The silicone implants were actually banned in 1993, but were subsequently re-instated when research found no connection between ruptured silicone implants and any disease.

Ruptured implants can have several effects. If it’s a saline breast implant the breast loses it’s shape. As you can imagine this is very easy to notice. The saline implants will be harmless when rupturing since they will just leave saltwater in your body. If a silicone implant breaks the only way to know is through an MRI. So far there have been no connections shown between ruptured silicone implants and breast augmentation complications. [...]
